Real estate is a truly wonderful field to work in if you want to run your own business, if you are client-centric and if you can handle the lifestyle of working a commission-based job. The great thing about real estate is that most of us know quite a bit already, especially if you’ve already bought and sold your own home!

So what are the most important things to know about a career in real estate?

You are an Entrepreneur – You’re basically now a small business owner, which is a great advantage to a career in real estate. While you get to be your own boss and manage your own time, you will also need to learn how to market to prospective buyers and sellers. If no one knows you’re in the field, they won’t know to call you! Some brokers will have a more structured office and will help you get leads and even do some of your advertising, but if you want to stay busy and get yourself going, self-promotion is always important.

It’s all about the Clients – Clients are the most important part to your real estate business; your job is to keep your clients happy and well-informed. Since real estate is a people business, you always want to make sure you satisfy the clients’ needs. There are times that buyers and sellers may be unrealistic about the market, but it is your job to show them how much they can afford or how much their home is really worth. It’s important that you remain professional at all times, and never seem pushy in your sales goals.

Commission-Based Jobs – For the most part, real estate is a commission-only position. This can be a great thing for motivated individuals, as there is no limit to the income they can produce in a given year. With anything commission though, it’s always a good idea to have a reserve fund set up for basic living expenses. Some months could be great and others may not always work out. When you’re getting started, you’ll need to stay motivated. Sales do take time, but once you get going, you can really do well!
